Rear Entry 118

BUCS SIGN WRIGHT: Since Cortland Finnegan already signed with the Rams last night, the Bucs turned their attention to Eric Wright, a cornerback from Detroit. And by “turned their attention to”, I mean they signed him first thing this morning.

Bucs not slowing down in FA…next move-agreed to terms with CB Eric Wright, 5-year deal. More to come on http://Buccaneers.com.

Wright spent four of his five years in the league with the Browns and was only with Detroit last year. He has 13 career interceptions and started all 16 games last season. He’s a good addition and is the best corner left available on the free agent market, but isn’t going to make anyone forget Morris Claiborne yet.

VINCENT JACKSON IS SIGNED, CORNY: As predicted, Vincent Jackson signed with the Bucs last night. His contract is a five-year deal for, get this, $55,555,555. The reason for that particular value? It’s all about #5. I’m not even joking.

The high-fiving deal was a nod to quarterback Josh Freeman, who wears No. 5 and now has a legitimate No. 1 receiver.

Yes, this is all very cute. The funny thing is that they’re just tossing around hundreds of thousands of dollars in a contract to be funny. Now you’ll have to excuse me, I have to get a dentist to pry these fillings out so I can pay my electric bill this month.

SILEO FIRED: I just wanted to take a moment to acknowledge that Dan Sileo was fired for this comment on Monday about upcoming free agents:

Co-host: “You heard it here first, Finnegan, Vincent Jackson and Vilma.”

Sileo: “Wow! Wow! They’re going to spend all that money.” (laughter)

Co-host: “Then Dan will be like: ‘well, they’re not really all that good.’”

Sileo: No, no! If they get those three monkeys I’m good. I’m ready man. I’m ready. I want those guys. Those are great players.”

I posted something on Twitter when he got fired that I didn’t think he meant “monkey” in the racist way that would get someone fired, simply because I didn’t think anyone talked like that anymore. But reading it in context, I can’t imagine what he would have meant except that. What logical reason would there be to call someone a monkey in that conversation? Besides, you know, being an awful, awful racist who uses slurs from the 1880s. I didn’t think anyone could really be that dumb. I should know better by now than say something like that. Yes, people really can be that dumb.

It’s too bad he had to offend just about everyone (except racists) to finally get it done, but I’m glad he’s off the air now. I haven idea how he hung around this long to begin with.

@manbearpig, where did you get the Nick info? That would be awesome.
Anyone hear more about Vilma? I don’t know how much he has left, but as a veteran presence he would be excellent.

Scott, I second your opinion about Sileo. I only listened to his show a couple of times, and each time it nearly made my ears bleed. How that clown stayed on the air at 620 for so many years is beyond my comprehension. On a more positive note, great clicky and awesome job by the Bucs of signing Nicks!

Howard Cosell referred to a Redskins black receiver as a “little monkey” once on Monday Night Football, and then sort of chuckled, as if he was referring to a really cute baby chimp in a zoo. I’m pretty sure he had been drinking heavily.
