Josh Freeman

Jets Game Notes

Vincent Jackson
* We’ve seen this version of Josh Freeman before. He starts off cold but gets better in the middle of the game. Then it’s unpredictable. He can either pull some amazing victories out at the last second or implode into a huge heap of suck. Sunday he was looking pretty decent at the end of the game, so that’s a plus. But they started off completely out of synch and poorly managed, and that’s on him. Sorry the speaker in your helmet wasn’t working, you should have a play ready just in case that happens. Just from this one game, I have a hard time trusting him for a whole season. And I’m not the only one; the fact that he wasn’t voted team captain is significant.

* But the safety wasn’t his fault.

* Wasn’t Kevin Ogletree the Cowboy who caught all those clutch passes when Dez Bryant and Miles Austin were covered? What the hell happened to this guy?

* Nice to know the Bucs have a kicker that can drill a potential game winner under pressure. The carousel-o-kickers had be a little nervous in the offseason.

* Darrelle Revis looks good. I’m not ready to say the trade was worth it yet, but I like the way he’s coming back from the injury. And let’s face it, no rookie would have gotten Treasure Island to change their name for a day. And know this: If Revis gets hurt again, some team will throw 4-digits against the Bucs.

* Lavonte David’s penalty to completely screw the game was mostly bullshit. Geno Smith’s foot hadn’t even landed out of bounds yet when David pushed him. Yes, that’s where he was headed and it would have taken a freakish feat of athleticism to avoid it. But it happens. When defenders give up on plays, runners have a way of making them look dumb. I have a vivid memory of a defensive lineman having a quarterback in the grasp but not taking him down because he didn’t want to get fined. So he let up, but the whistle hadn’t blown, so the quarterback just ran away. I’ve been looking for this clip for a little while now and can’t find it, but it’s a great example of what happens when you don’t play through (If someone wants to tell me who the defender and/or quarterback was, that would be just swell. I keep thinking it was Vince young, but I don’t think Young ever did anything memorable.) My point is that David need to be more aware, but his actions were understandable and he certainly should not shoulder all the blame for this loss.

* Vincent Jackson had an awesome day, but he should get some shit in the locker room for getting caught from behind by a linebacker.

* Two sacks by Mason Foster? Very cool, but is his thing going to be blitzing?

* Doug Martin didn’t appear to have any room to run, and that’s mostly the line’s fault. Carl Nicks needs to come back because Gabe Carimi isn’t getting it done and Donald Penn had a terrible game.

This was a bad Jets team with a rookie starting quarterback and the Bucs still lost. They’ll get better during the season, but so far I think the same thing I thought during the preseason: This team will be frustrating to watch.

right? Jackson is freaking slow. we have seen it last year, too.
okay, big guy, the main thing for him is to catch jump balls, but come the fuck on.

actually, I agree with the refs on that penalty. yeah, he was not totally out of bounds yet, but that push was just simply too big to not throw the flag (and, of course, Smith managed to fall down spectacularly). in a situation like this, just firmly grab the opponent and escort him out. I’m not mad at David, it was a mistake easy to make, and at least he was not as idiotic as Clay Matthews with his late hit, but I agree with the refs.

before the season I said it’s good we start against the Jets, because if we suck against THEM, we don’t have to worry about the season anymore, we will know instantly that we are hopeless, so it won’t be as frustrating as the last few years have been.
boy, was I wrong… this was one of our most frustrating games. I was at work, so only seen bits and pieces, but can’t force myself to rewatch the whole game, cause I know it was all pointless because of one single penalty (well, that, and the other DOZEN of them).

There was no fire in the belly of the offense from play 1. That carried over and continued to show up as a lack of agressive play (Where is Jeremy Steavens when we need him?) I thought one of the worst performers was Davin Joseph. He looked tentative and got no push all day long. Maybe he should have had some reps in the pre-season?

I thought the defense did their job and put us in a position to win. The offense was horrible. Maybe this scheme is too intellectual and not enough smash mouth? Maybe our college OL coach doesn’t know how to block NFL defenses? Maybe the entire Offensive coaching staff needs to forfeit a pay check for that outing.

I thought the game was poor. Freeman troubles me, the intensity of the offense troubles me. I am not worried yet though. Lots of team have bad opening games. Show me improvement is all I ask right now.

What annoys me are the “fans.” Man, I can understand the frustration… having been a Bucs fan from Day One. But I can’t understand the anger, the cynicism, and the flat out hate. I look at comments on articles and they are just fuming with unfocused hate… and ignorance.

I want to punch the crap out of Fennelly too. I think he gets off on attacking the Bucs. It’s one thing to point out problems and to state an honest opinion, it’s another to whine and scream and smear the way he does.

BTW, For those looking to believe Florio’s conspiratorial attempts to turn the players only meeting into a gripe session aimed at the coaches or at Freeman or Santa or whatever, Andrew Economous has shot that down.

Wait wait wait wait…so, right when you’ve basically taken the month off, you come out saying that trading a mid-1st rounder in the weakest draft in 20 years isn’t worth @ least 5 years of premier corner play? You wanted Dee Milliner for 7 years of mediocrity?

Holy shit. The loss was bad enough but now it’s a PR nightmare. What the hell is going on with this team? I’ve read a bunch of articles this morning about meetings, poor coaching, player revolt, qb controversy. I had such high hopes for this season. Looks like they are quitting extra early this year. Really pisses me off. I can’t even enjoy my fall.

Mark S

Mark S (September 13, 2013 at 10:08am:

The articles I read and one of the best is in (believe it or not) the Tampa Tribune, contradict that there is any quitting going on. The players have moved on from Josh missing the team photo, Schiano says its not an issue, everyone is focusing on the Saints. The one thing that really gives me hope is the NE/Jets game. Apparently the Jets are better, at least on defense, than predicted. It may not last as teams will figure out what the Jets are doing, but right now they are not so bad. Maybe the poor play along the OL was because the Jets DL is just that good.

Scott

Scott (September 13, 2013 at 10:26am:

jar: Thanks. Upon watching it again, Kiwanuka probably gave up a little too son, but who can blame him? I still don’t think David’s hit was bad enough for a penalty let alone the fine he got.

Matt: Read the Fennelly article. It’s not worth a whole post, but he has already cashed the season in based on one game. That seems to reflect what a lot of fans think, but it’s premature and makes for terrible fans. And I’m happy to say I haven’t read Florio in months. It feels pretty good.

liquidmuse3: Just like it’s too early to say the season is over, it’s too early to say the trade was good. Some players never return to their elite days after ACL repair, or they become more injury prone and can’t stay on the field. I’m more on board with it now than I was when it happened, but still not completely sold. I didn’t want Milliner, but you don’t know how good he’s going to be either (despite him coming from Alabama), and usually youth wins out over older and injured. Plus there were several good corners still on the market. But we’ll see. He looked good Sunday.

Meat: I’ll get you a clicky on the next post. It’s been a while.

Matt Price

Matt Price (September 13, 2013 at 03:06pm:

Scott, I read it and it really pissed me off. Fennelly is such an amazing ass! He WANTS failure. It seems to make him happy.

Nice thinking on not reading Florio. I should stop too. The guy’s conspiracy theories and attempts to generate issues drives me nuts. He still hasn’t mentioned the Economous clarification except as a vaguely worded bullet point in their daily links article. And at the same time, he keep taking shots as Schiano about the meeting, even though he’s basing that on a myth.

This season has just begun and I think there is a lot of reason for hope.

MarkS, Great point. The Jets looked surprisingly good last night, so I don’t feel so bad about the game. Plus, it is the first game. Teams take time to jell. There are a lot of good teams who looked like crap Sunday — Patriots, Redskins, etc.

Aesir_B (September 15, 2013 at 08:52pm:

Two weeks in a row. Might aswell have watched replay of last week’s game instead. Same penalties, amateur hour on Spec. Teams (the time-out). Play conservative with 1 pt lead in final minutes, screw it up. Spent half the game defending Free and hating on Schiano then half the game loathing him and vice versa, but he (but mostly D) does just enough for Bucs to almost win it so by the end I like him again.

Can we nust be good on Defense AND offense at the same time for 16 weeks? Where is our Stroughter? Or even a K2 for those damn 3rd downs. Williams can’t catch, Vjax catches some but mostly falls down or gets caught by linebackers.
Rambling.. Going to go in Football sensory depravation mode for a few days, really helped last week.

Louie

Louie (September 15, 2013 at 09:12pm:

Again, defeat ripped from the jaws of victory. The same thing will probably happen next week. Defense will keep game close, then they’ll fuck it up at the end.

I don’t know about you guys, but there is no way in hell I’m giving the ball back to Brees with a minute left. NO WAY! I would have gone for the first down and run out the clock. A field goal from that distance was not a given and Brees could still win it with a TD (which they were 5 yards away from when they kicked the game winner). It would have been so sweet beating Payton by the points he took off the board at the end of the first half. Oh, well…

On the plus size, it was nice seeing a defense (until the last drive). Kind of like the old days — all defense, no offense.

Can they just hire Gruden back so he can win a Superbowl with Schiano’s players???

manbearpig

manbearpig (September 15, 2013 at 09:27pm:

I know Freeman’s numbers weren’t good but this is squarely on the head coach. Play not to lose and you’re gonna lose. Go for the kill for once! He’s done this numerous times. I’m frankly over schiano. I was on board but he just doesn’t have it. “Trust, belief, accountability” was his little moto. He doesn’t trust the qb. Lets the game get away from us. Then he doesn’t hold himself accountable for not going for the win. I’m done with this staff.

Let me preface, prior to being skewered, that I have been a fan since their inception – too many stories. Now, Josh Freeman stares down one (1) receiver each time – that is pathetic. I want him to do well and the rest of the team as well. His skill has not improved – whether under Rah or Shiano. Plenty of blame goes around (including Dominic!!!!) but please stop blindly defending Freeman. He either is too stupid or just doesn’t care. The NFL is not helping with their sickening calls against the defense – they need to just put flags on the players.

BaldBuc4055

BaldBuc4055 (September 16, 2013 at 03:47pm:

It’s a broken record every fucking week. Keep it close, gutless offensive play-calling that gives the other team one more shot, blow it in the end. Schiano has to trust Freeman, and that 3rd and 6 play in the final seconds was an obvious passing down. Yet they call an option toss play? REALLY? Grow a pair, go for the first down, run the clock, and don’t give Drew Brees another chance. That FG was not a chip shot by any means. I liked the hiring of Schiano when it was made, but I am over this coaching staff’s gutless, cowardly play-calling.

jarldg (October 02, 2013 at 10:25am:

This will all pass- we’ve endured a lot over these past few years. I’ve reverted back to 2009 where I look at each game with enthusiasm for the rookies and young players, watching them develop, fully expecting a loss. It was painful the first three games to watch those wins slip away, but in reality this team can be successful with a decent quarterback. The front office is a different question altogether, whether they’ll all be gone at the end of the season, there are several quality coaches on the roster (O-line, linebacker, rb), something a new HC could keep.

BaldBuc4055

BaldBuc4055 (October 02, 2013 at 02:21pm:

On the field, this team hasn’t quit, and they’re playing very hard despite all the bullshit happening around them. But the frustration level has got to be at an all-time high for the veterans. The most important thing at this point is to get whatever value they can in a trade for Freeman, and to also consider canning Schiano ASAP. The amount of leaks coming out of One Buc Place shows you how unhappy everybody is in that place right now.

Louie

Louie (October 02, 2013 at 09:46pm:

I don’t see how Schiano survives this, but if he goes, how does Dom survive? It sure appears his front office is spinning out of control. He needs to be kicking some ass if these “leaks” are coming from anyone in the organization.

next year if either of them are on this team im out

Louie

That 2009 draft was a complete waste — Freeman was the last one left.

That house cleaning the Glazer’s did after the 2008 season was a MONUMENTAL fuck-up and the Bucs still haven’t recovered. This franchise has been nothing but shit ever since.

BaldBuc4055

BaldBuc4055 (October 03, 2013 at 04:44pm:

Dominick’s drafts since 2009 have actually ranged from okay (2010) to awesome (2012), but he should also be under the gun as well, and not just because Freeman was his first draft choice. When things are as bad as they are, EVERYBODY needs to be put on notice.

@Louie, that post-2008 house-cleaning is looking worse as time goes on. The rebuild started there and it hasn’t stopped since.

I know that firing Schiano means starting over again, but at this point, the atmosphere around the team is so toxic that the Glazers don’t have a choice unless the team miraculously starts winning games.

Aesir_B

Aesir_B (October 04, 2013 at 01:38pm:

Bucs have just made some team very fucking happy indeed.

I’m glad we’re all agreed that Schiano has to walk. In my view he has to make the playoffs to keep his job. I don’t care if he wins 4 in December.. all this talk about “which way is the arrow pointing at the end of the season” is bullshit.

I don’t know about Dominik, I don’t know what there is to hate really. He can’t draft a DE to save his life but thats nothing new. Everytime we had a personnel problem on this team it has been adressed the following season. Am I bitter about Talib, Jermaine Phillips, Blount, Michael Bennett yes.. but those first two had it coming.
