Jon Gruden Is Confused

Oh, man, I hope coach Landry saw what an awesome catch I just made!
Jon Gruden is obviously a Bucstats reader. Shortly after my posting the Antonio Bryant piece before this one, Gruden had a conference where he discussed Bryant and then stretched to include Michael Irvin in the conversation, just so he can be more like me. Isn’t that sweet? Only his doesn’t work so well.

“We thought he was a great talent,” said Bucs head coach Jon Gruden. “He had a 1,000 yards in Cleveland and started as a rookie in Dallas alongside Michael Irvin.

Except he didn’t. Irvin retired in 1999 after a game in Philadelphia where Tim Hauck turned Irvin’s spine into a bendy straw. It was a very famous scene, actually, because Philadelphia fans were cheering as Irvin lay twisted and motionless on the green concrete slab that was the Vet playing field. Several Eagles players said publicly how disgusted and embarrassed they were at their fans’ behavior. Yet another reason to loathe and despise Eagles fans.

But I digress. Bryant was drafted in 2002 and started his first game as a rookie opposite… wait for it… Joey Galloway! The funny part is that Bryant wore Irvin’s #88 in Dallas. Gruden should scratch “Background Checker” off his list of possible occupations after he retires from coaching.

Wasn’t that the game where Donovan McNabb said (after the game): “I didn’t know you could get injured in a football game.” Then he wondered what would happen if they had a war, but nobody came.

Remember, these are the same assholes who threw batteries at Santa Claus!

By the way, Scott, do you buy Gruden’s crap about Galloway not being capable of being a third down only wide-receiver? That sounds like total horseshit. If you can run and you can catch full time, you can do it part time as well.

I think he’s trying to publicly save face for the player that gave him three 1,000 yard seasons. He doesn’t want to come out and say, “At this stage in their careers, Bryant is better than Galloway,” so he throws stuff like that out. I don’t blame him. Why embarrass your guy like that?
