Simms Loses Denver QB Battle To Neckbeard

Texas fail.
Chris Simms, the guy who could never get a fair shake in Tampa because Jon Gruden hated him so much, has to add Josh McDaniels to the list of coaches out to get him now because McDaniels just named Kyle Orton the starter in Denver.

“There’s a lot of difficult aspects about what we ask our quarterback to do in our offense and Kyle has really grasped some of them more quickly than Chris did,” McDaniels said in explaining the move after the second day of a three-day minicamp at the team’s Dove Valley headquarters.

Note that McDaniels isn’t saying it’s a physical thing. It’s intellectual. Simms can’t fall back on his spleen anymore. Jesus, he’s gotten ten times more use out of that spleen after it was removed than he ever did when was inside him. But at least he’s being gracious.

“Kyle’s extremely underrated,” Simms said. “I’ve always felt that way. He was underrated in college and with the Bears. He throws the ball very well. He’s a smart guy. He’s a big guy. There’s a lot of plusses with Kyle.”

It’s not like he can say much else. Simms is going to have to work with the guy for at least the next seven months. No sense making it weird.

Orton said that it’s been difficult trying to find a comfort level in McDaniels’ offense and that he’s had good and bad plays along the way. That was evident Saturday, when Orton had interceptions run back for scores by cornerback Jack Williams and outside linebacker Robert Ayers.

Sorry, just had to get that bit in about Ayers.

So, yeah, maybe Gruden wasn’t just being a douche and he knew what he was doing with Simms all along. Come to think of it, Gruden also sold all his Chrysler, GM and AIG stock last year. Jon Gruden is the second coming of Nostradamus!

This was predictable. Well, hope Chris gets some playing time in the preseason. Ironically, the best stop for him in the NFL might be: the Bucs. Now that we’re going to be running a more-vertical offense instead of the west coast, Simms would fit in a lot better here.

Did you see where Raheem Morris said Byron Leftwich has the early lead on the starting QB job because of his experience? I’d write a post about it, but I have something called a job. That I’m at. Right now.

Scott (June 15, 2009 at 11:59am:

Morris said “it’s an edge” not that Leftwich “has an edge”. Important distinction. He also said it will all be determined in the preseason and said it’s about what-have-you-done-for-me-lately, almost intentionally nullifying the point about Leftwich’s previous experience. McCown has this. I was going to post an entry about it, but this comment saved me the time.

Let’s just hope this whole thing is actually a competition for the best quarterback. I tire of all the games other than football.

Two thoughts…

1) Isn’t it aweful early to name your starter? McDaniels made that decision without seeing ANY live game action. Simms must have really sucked it up.

2) If Gruden was so right about Simms, I hope he’s not so right about McCown. Gruden thought Griese had a better chance at Atlanta last year than McCown.

Scott (June 15, 2009 at 05:14pm:

Gruden made a mistake by replacing McCown with Griese at the last second. Everyone at One Buc knows it and I think even Gruden admitted it, although I can’t seem to track down where he said it.

Chris Simms will be the starter in Denver week 1.
McDaniels is just pushing him.
