Michael Clayton Gives QBs His Seal Of Approval
November 13, 2009 at 10:26am by Scott

I’m sure Josh Freeman and Josh Johnson were up all night worrying that they didn’t have Michael Clayton’s vote of confidence in their abilities. Oh whatever were they going to do without the approving words of a wide receiver who can’t catch? Well, everyone can exhale now. Michael bestows his blessing. First Freeman.
“He did it all as a rookie quarterback and I was proud of him as a veteran receiver,” Clayton said. “I’ve seen a lot and for him to make the decisions that he made, under the circumstances, he did a great job and everybody would say that.”
I don’t know why this bothers me, but it does. He’s seen a lot? Clayton was basically invisible from September 2005 until two months ago. He had one good game, Raheem Morris dared all of us to write about it (I will NEVER let him live that challenge down) and then that was about it until he adjusted on the ball last Sunday and made one catch. He’s on pace for his least productive year yet, and I guarantee you Freeman will be looking for Kellen Winslow, Sammie Stroughter and even Brian Clark before Clayton.
Read the whole article. He says shit like “As a veteran” and “From my time in the league” several times. I think you have to accomplish more before you can pass yourself off as a savvy veteran.
“A quarterback with touch is a good one to have,” said Clayton. “Being a wide receiver [and playing with] a guy that has touch, you feel like you’re not going to drop a ball because it just sticks to your hands.”
“That’s why I can just stick a hand out there and hope the ball lands in it.”
“It’s phenomenal to finally be in a situation with a young quarterback that you can learn with, get to know, and get better with. That’s only going to make this organization better.”
Michael should not not expect Christmas gifts from Chris Simms, Bruce Gradkowski or Luke McCown this year. Is Clayton really backhandedly implying that his years of failure are because of the quarterbacks he worked with? Is he expecting me to believe that Jeff Garcia didn’t make him better? Garcia has his faults, but he gladly works with younger players to improve them.
Then Clayton moves to Josh Johnson, and steps on the offensive line on the way.
“Under certain circumstances, we’ve been in a situation here where our offensive line hasn’t been as good as others, and a quarterback that has no mobility doesn’t stand a chance,” said Clayton.
WHY IS HIS MOUTH OPEN?? Holy shit, Michael, shut the fuck up. You have no sage words of wisdom from your experience in the league, you have no credibility and you have hands as hard as diamonds. Stop doing interviews, stop offering your opinions, stop blaming everyone else and work on catching more than 25 balls this year.

Well unless we find some decent receivers out there we’re stuck with him. This would be the ‘downside’ to “I’ll tolerate you until I can replace you”.

I LOVE IT! ha! To Mike’s credit, at least he’s caught a couple deep balls, in years past it was just a couple over the middle sustaining drives, at least the few this year make a difference, ha!
Did you hear about Garcia calling Olsen and cracking on Freeman for sliding feet first in the first half? He actually left a message he wanted Freeman to hear? I hope Freeman completely disregarded the message. Jeff was a tough son of a bitch but there’s a reason Gruden sat him prior to the Playoffs, his small ass frame can’t withstand a 16+ game season. I’m all for the 6′5 260lb Freeman sliding if it means he’s under center in Weeks 15, 16, and beyond… link

I catch the wdae interview show on podcast, but when I saw it was Clayton I couldn’t even bring myself to listen to it. For me it stings in two ways: He’s a big bag of suck right now, and has been, but what makes it worse is that I’ve WANTED to like him since he came on board. Every year, a new excuse for him… I’m just tired.
