“I Can’t Cuss At An Official.”

November 16, 2009 at 01:24pm by Scott

Hey, Raheem, this may not be the best time, but would you sign Roger Goodell's birthday card? It's from all of us. There will be cake after the game!

Maybe now we know why Jon Gruden is staying in the broadcast booth. Raheem Morris got penalized 15 yards for unsportsmanlike conduct and I’m pretty sure he’s going to get hammered with a decent-sized fine for telling the referee who ruled against Michael Clayton that it was “fucking bullshit”. Gruden’s salary would be reduced to the equivalent of a dishwasher if he got fined every time he swore to an official.

“I’m done with it,” Morris said during his weekly news conference at One Buc Place. “I’ve got to grow from that situation and get better. I can’t cuss at an official.”

Of course he’s done with it. The more he says, the more they’re going to suck out of his paycheck. He seems to get it.

“You know I can’t comment,” Morris said. “Every comment is the wrong comment.”

Sorry, it’s a lot more fun when the coaches can bitch at the officials without fear of reprimand. Remember when Norm Van Brocklin would absolutely rip open referees when he was coaching the Falcons? Then he’d laugh and spit and slap a broad and it would all be cool. The referee has the ultimate authority anyway. Why are we treating them like depressed teenage chicks on the verge of suicide?

Did you see last week where Jay Cutler got fined $20,000 for “abusive conduct” towards an official, but Tommie Harris only got a $7,500 fine for punching Duece Lutui in the face while he was helpless on his belly? Those were both in the same game! Officials should be secure enough in their authority to not have to fine a coach or player if they start getting mouthy. Touch an official and you’re ejected, fine. But when talking mean to one is deemed almost three times worse than punching an opponent in the face, they are officially pussies.

There is something un-American about putting a muzzle on coaches and announcers. Players and coaches get criticized. What makes official so special? They sure aren’t perfect. Watching games was more fun when the annoucners could go off on the officiating. Knowing that it can happen is a serious deterrent to officials misbehaving. So, while we are talking about fucking bullshit calls, the excessive celebration penalty was a fucking bullshit call.

Baseball managers get all the leeway in the world when talking to umpires. I think the ref here just had to realize that the rule is fucking bullshit and let it slide.

Imagine if coaches seriously got fined for cursing at ref’s, surely Raheem realizes he can do anything short of killing a ref and get away with it…

Anyone hear about the Titans (?) owner who got fined $250,000 for flicking off opposing fans? That’s a small glimpse into how much these teams really bank. 250k must be nothing for that guy.
