Josh Freeman

Olson Signs Extension

Oh shit, did I... did I leave the oven on?
Pewter Report is reporting (in what appears to be an exclusive) that Greg Olson has signed a one-year extension with the Buccaneers since his contract was due to expire at the end of this season.

Retaining Olson allows the Bucs to have system and coaching continuity for quarterback Josh Freeman, which was a big factor in the Tampa Bay’s decision to retain Olson.

And that’s really what it’s all about right now. Everything is being lined up so Freeman has every opportunity to succeed. The one-year term is the right way to go now, because although continuity for the new quarterback is great, the offense also has to produce points. Olson has been at a disadvantage because he hasn’t had a reliable quarterback to run his offense, but let’s say Freeman starts looking like the real deal some time next season. If the offense still isn’t producing, Mark Dominik is going to have to evaluate whether Olson is still the right guy for the job or not. But one step at a time.

This is also probably a good sign for Raheem Morris and his continued employment with the team. It seems unlikely that the Bucs would choose to extend Morris’s preferred offensive coordinator if he wasn’t going to be the head coach himself. There’s a limit to the number of terminated employees the Glazers want to keep paying.

So this means no Charlie Weis as our next OC when he gets canned after this weekends loss to Stanford. Not that Charlie would be the answer, but at least he has run an offense before and while he hasn’t fixed the defense in South Bend, they do put up some points.

True, and perhaps stepping back down into a coordinator role is the right thing for him to do, but I’ve been wary of how hit-or-miss Beliceck cast-offs have been once they move out of papa bear’s house.

Agreed. Charlie seems pretty resigned to the fact that he was going to be fired this weekend and that he wanted to be back in the NFL where he was more respected and had more friends. I would take him over the train wreck that we have. He has done a good job with Claussen, and with Freeman, Caddy/Ward, Winslow and Bryant I have to believe that he would be a better alternative.
