Jon Gruden is defending the playcall that had Jeff Garcia throw deep to Ike Hilliard for the touchdown on third down with under a minute to play.
"If you get a guy open, I don't think it's low percentage," Gruden said. "We felt we had the right play. I don't regret that call."
Gruden added, "Except for the part where Garcia overthrew him. That part I definitely regret. Plus I should have yelled more."
Normally I would agree with Gruden about getting the guy open and taking the shot. I couldn't find a lot of fault with the playcalling for most of the game, but at the end of the game I had to cock my head to one side and make that sound cartoon dogs make when they don't understand something. Garcia had several overthrows all day long and his receivers were having trouble reeling the balls in when he could get it to them. Is a deep ball against their corners really the best use of your last few seconds? You have to think that in that situation the middle of the field would have been open for at least the first down (which it was on the next play except Hilliard got tattooed for the interception.) Something else the Jaguars might not have expected: a fucking run. Would a draw play have been so bad? Six or seven yards would have made it a 55 yard field goal or so with 30 seconds to set it up. Not a gimme, but it had a higher percentage of working than that deep thing he threw.
