Jeff Garcia Makes Up For Lost Time

Oh God the passing game. What the hell happened to Tampa Bay's passing game? Every aspect of it broke down at some point during the game. Pass blocking was pretty crappy, especially by Davin Joseph. Rob Meier split the double-team of Joseph and to get his sack. You know who was the best pass blocker yesterday? Donald Penn. I don't think I heard Paul Spicer's name called once [upon review, Spicer had one tackle that I apparently don't remember.] Penn pounded Sammy Knight on Michael Bennett's touchdown run. Everyone else was mediocre to terrible.

Speaking of Bennett, let's talk about dropped passes. Jeff Garcia couldn't have placed that ball on Bennett's wheel route any better if it was a handoff, and yet somehow it was dropped. Bennett, Joey Galloway, Ike Hilliard, Earnest Graham... they all dropped perfectly catchable passes. I think I counted seven drops altogether, but there may have been more.

Garcia wasn't exactly sharp yesterday, either. Forget the last interception; that wasn't on him and it didn't matter anyway. And the first one was more of an awesome play by Aaron Glenn than it was a screw up by Garcia, although you'd think all that experience he has would have warned him that Glenn was about to jump. No, the second interception was the backbreaker. Garcia knows better than to let one fly when he's under so much pressure. Taking a sack isn't always such a bad thing.

Speaking of that last interception, even though I was distraught at the time, it was still pretty funny to watch Reggie Nelson's own guy tackle him afterwards to prevent him from fumbling away the possession. Ahh, rookies.

And then the overthrows! He overthrew both Hilliard and Galloway for definite touchdowns. I realize Garcia did make some nice throws and helped out by scrambling quite a bit, but games like this one are why some people were skeptical of bringing Garcia to Tampa Bay. He looked like he did when he played for Cleveland.

Bennett has more burst that I initially thought, and I knew he was fast. Nice move putting him in the slot and letting him get in open space.

I will say in defense of Jon Gruden that there were plenty of plays there to be made and that poor execution was mostly to blame. But with Earnest Graham getting 4.4 yards per carry, I would have thought that he would have run the ball more to calm down the offense and get everyone back in a good head again, especially after a couple interceptions and drops. The run blocking was decent and should have been used more. Graham only got 14 carries.

Oh, and Maurice Stovall, go sit in the corner for a while and think about what you did. After John Madden blew the lid off of Michael Irvin, you can't get away with offensive pass interference like in the old days. Jerramy Stevens totally bailed you out of that one with his big catch.

After the defensive line figured out Jacksonville's running game, they did a nice job of stopping it. Chris Hovan and Kevin Carter looked especially good at times.

But don't think I didn't see it when Carter kind of gave up on Maurice Jones-Drew's left-end run. If Carter had run full speed to get to him, Jones-Drew wouldn't have been able to turn the corner. That was disappointing.

I heard Ronde Barber has been a lot more vocal this season and it trying to be the emotional leader of the team. Performances like his yesterday will go a long way to cementing him as the leader of the defense. That fourth down stop in the backfield was an incredible momentum shifter.

If you wondered why the Bucs cut Zack Crockett and added Byron Storer, you found out on that kickoff return after Galloway's touchdown. New guys have to make a name for themselves on special teams, and Storer did that yesterday.

This was pretty much the same game as last week. It was all about the mistakes. The 133 yards the Jaguars rushed for didn't kill the Bucs and the defense pretty much kept in check (although you'd like to see an interception come from all of his misfires.) Drops, picks and penalties. So now the Saints are only one game behind the Bucs, who themselves are one game behind the Panthers after they folded like a card table for Indianapolis. The good news is that every game from here on out is very winnable. No, I'm serious.

See this, Bucs? This is how to tackle a safety after an interception so he doesn't make a touchdown. Try it sometime.

I wish that Gruden would come up with some trick plays for fourth and short for once. I know the opposing team would'nt expect it,especially not from our Bucs!
