“We’ve Got The Beef”

Beef 1

There’s a good interview with Carl Nicks in FS Florida. Nothing earth shattering or anything, but some decent quotes, including what he thinks of rookies.

“I don’t want to get too close and then they leave or go to another team, so I just pretty much stay away from the rookies and let them do their thing.”

Kind of like the guy who works at the animal shelter who doesn’t want to name that new collie that just came in. But he does think the rookies are putting pressure on the veterans, specifically Doug Martin and LeGarrette Blount.

He works like he’s a free-agent guy, and that’s a good thing. He had Blount stepping his game up, and that’s good.”

Nicks likes the potential of the running game and, apparently, the size of the offensive line.

“We have the personnel, we’ve got the beef and we’ve got the running backs for sure.”

Nicks realizes that everything has been without pads so far, but he likes the potential of the offensive line on paper. He’ll get a chance to test that potential in pads next week when everyone comes together for a mandatory minicamp. Honestly, I think the offensive line is probably the best complete unit on the team at this point.

I agree with you Scott about the OL being our strength and that is, paradoxically what tempers my enthusiasm for the team. The best unit on the team has Zutah at center, Jeremy (call me offsides) Trueblood at right tackle and Penn coming off a sub-par year. Still lots of questions.

I am expecting that Nicks being next to Penn will make Penn even better. Penn has made noises about being excited and motivated. I am looking forward to seeing it on the field. Having Zutah between two all-pros should elevate his effectiveness. Trueblood is in a contract year and hopefully has his best year yet. So, lots of reasons to be hopeful.

I’ve been a Bucs fan since the franchise was awarded to Bill Mangurian. In all that time I don’t ever remember us having a really outstanding OL. We’ve had a few pretty good ones but mostly they’ve been mediocre or worse. Hopefully that will change this year.

The offensive line has supposedly been the strongest unit on the team heading into each of the last three or four seasons. Maybe the presence of Nicks and the absence of Faine can push them toward some consistency. We’ll see.
