REAR ENTRIES: Old Player, Old Coach, Bad Weather

Oh that kid's fucking dead.
PARIS WARREN IS A SAINT: I saw this a couple days ago, but couldn’t find a spot to shoehorn it into. Paris Warren and his floppy ankle signed with the Saints last week. Remember, this is the team that made Marques Colston, another seventh-rounder, a star. Of course, it’s also the team that signed Jason David, so it’s not like they have a magic wand. I do, though. I keep it in my pants.

DERRICK BROOKS GIVES GOOD ADVICE: Gus Bradley, former Buccaneer linebackers coach, is now the defensive coordinator in Seattle. Usually it’s the player that takes words of wisdom away from his coach. But when the player is Derrick Brooks, coaches should just shut up and listen.

“Derrick Brooks told me something that has stuck with me: Many have the blueprint, few have the parts. I think that’s really accurate,” Bradley said.

“Over the last couple of years, I’ve always had that in the back of my mind – to be more aware of the parts and how important those parts are to making it run smoothly,” Bradley said. “That’s what we’ve got. We’ve got a great group of parts.”

Brooks wasn’t just a good guy to have around for the younger players, he was a good guy to have around, period. His leadership and attitude permeated everything. I’m not going to bemoan his release; that ship has sailed. I just hope that the new leaders we already talked about like Jeff Faine and Chris Hovan can bring a comparable level of juice to the team.

OTA DELAYED FOR RAIN: Raheem Morris called the OTA this morning due to rain. I don’t know if it’s going to be canceled altogether or if it’s just delayed. But Morris has gone on record before (of course I can’t find the article now, but I know I read it) about being able to practice in unfavorable conditions, so I’m assuming there’s some nasty lightning to go along with it. Either that or it’s just an excuse to shaft the media out of watching them practice. There are reportedly several players missing from this practice.

UPDATE: Aaaaand they’re back on the field. The article also lists Barrett Ruud, Matt Bryant and Torrie Cox being out, but there’s a lot more than that. Angelo Crowell, Greg White, Cadillac Williams, Derrick Ward, Arron Sears, Donald Penn and Maurice Stovall are all MIA.

Derrek is also a good guy to be around. I met him a couple of years ago at my wife’s graduation from St. Leo’s University. Derrek was there to be honored for his charity work. One of his scholarship students was graduating. It was a very hot day and the grads had to assemble in the Library. The Library’s AC could not cope and the Grads in their hot gowns were sweating like they were on the field of a Bucs game. Derrek was right in the middle of it. He walked around the library, talking to the students. He was cheerful, positive and acted like the heat was nothing. Everyone got a lift. I am sure he could have spent all of his time in the faculty lounge. Class act.
