UPDATED: Brooks Signs… With ESPN

Quickie: Adam Schefter is reporting that Derrick Brooks signed a contract with ESPN to be an analyst this season. You knew that if the Raiders didn’t want him, pretty much no one would.

This is probably the best move for Derrick in the short run. He still has high name recognition and can speak intelligently on the game. It’s just that Derrick is not the most charismatic man in football. He’s got that slow, southern drawl when he speaks and is, generally, kind of a boring interview. Seriously, can you think of anyone who is more laid back off the field than Derrick? So hopefully they won’t put him in a position where he is expected to entertain as much as truly analyze. But ESPN is all about the flash-bang, so we’ll see how this works out. But in any case, good luck to him.

UPDATE: I guess we’re all just going to Twitter each other from now on? Warren Sapp said the following on his Twitter account:

Just Talked To D. Brooks He’s Not Retiring Just Going To ESPn to Do a Little Studio Work!!! Still Waiting On da Right Call!!! ;)

Winky-face approved, so you know he’s serious. We all thought New England was a possibility before, and now with Jerod Mayo out it seems a little more likely, but I still get the feeling he’s done with the pads.
