Bucs Hire Mustache, Also Get Wannstedt In Deal

I hope the Bucs keep Dave for a couple years, if only for the pics. He makes the best faces.
The Bucs waited until they were sure they had just the right facial hair lined up for the job before they fired special teams coordinator Bob Ligashesky. And then on Friday they announced they had hired Ned Flanders’s mustache to the position. But when the “old cookie duster” arrived in Tampa, it was attached to an unexpected bonus: former Bears, Dolphins and Pitt head coach Dave Wannstedt. Both the mustache and Wannstedt have the same amount of special teams coordinating experience.

But special teams? It’s been a while since Wannstedt’s coached them – like 35 years. Wannstedt coached receivers and special teams in his first full-time position, from 1977 to 1978 at Pitt.

Oh, sorry, I forgot about all that experience back before disco died. Does Wannstedt know that kickers approach the ball from an angle now? Someone should make sure.

So, is this is a good hire given the fact that coaching special teams is something of a specialty (no pun intended)? That question won’t get a firm answer until we kick things off in the fall, but my inclination is to trust that Schiano knows what he’s doing here.

Yeah, I guess me too. I like the fact that he has a lot of head coaching experience. Even if he got fired from all those jobs, what he learned from being the main guy for all those years is important and useful. So I can see Schiano wanting his input in, say, a consulting capacity. And I’m sure he learned something about special teams during all that time. But it just seems weird to put him in charge of that whole phase of the game. Wannstedt coached against Schiano for a few years in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference or whatever shit conference Pitt was in before moving the to ACC this year, so Schiano probably has a good idea about how good Wannstedt’s special teams were in those games. But Wannstedt also had his own special teams coordinator in those games that did all that work. Maybe Schiano should have found out who that dude was and hired him instead.

I’m on the fence about this hire, but like Stephen Holder said, I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt for now. Okily Dokily?
